Plowing Over Plateaus - Weight Loss Tips

It’s time to shake things up in your weight loss plan

So you’ve been following your weight loss plan for the past couple of months and have been successfully losing the weight - however, in the past few weeks your weight loss has stalled. The dial on your scale is not budging no matter what you do. Don’t let this discourage you, it

happens to every dieter. There is always a point where your body starts to adjust to your weight loss efforts, and you no longer see the results you did in the beginning. At this point you’ll need to rev up your metabolism by changing a few things in your weight loss plan.

Reasons for a Weight Loss Plateau:

  1. Your body begins to adapt to caloric restriction - when you severely restrict your caloric intake your body will eventually begin to adjust to operating on fewer calories. The body learns to conserve energy and no longer responds to the reduced calories by losing weight.
  2. Your body adapts to exercise - at the beginning of a new exercise program you will see the greatest rewards (in this case, weight loss) because the body is unfamiliar with the work it is performing. As the body begins to adapt to exercise and becomes more efficient, fat loss and weight loss will slow down and you will hit a plateau.

Ways to Overcome your Plateau:

  1. Shock your body - if you’ve been eating the same foods and consuming the same amount of calories everyday, you need to shake things up and cycle the amount of calories you’ve been consuming. This might mean increasing your caloric intake every five days or drastically lowering your caloric intake for one day every five days. You never want your body to adapt to a routine; by mixing things up you’ll rev your metabolism and get out of your weight loss rut.
  2. Change up your exercise - if you go to the gym four times a week, walk on the treadmill and do the same strength-training circuit every time, you need to switch things up. Add an incline to the treadmill, try a spinning class, or switch up your workout. You never want to give your body the opportunity to adapt to your plan. By switching things up you’ll be able to recharge yourself and get things moving.
