The holiday season is about more than presents and parties and fabulous food, it is about making promises to ourselves (promises we know we’ll never keep). Every New Year many of us make resolutions to lead healthier lifestyles and to attempt to recapture our physical form, The declaration is the same every year and yet somehow we always fall short of our goal.
So, why is it that we never seem to be able to fulfill our New Year’s resolutions, particularly those that focus on weight loss? The following are not only some of the reasons why we fail, but recommendations to help us achieve our goals.
Reaching too high – Many people create unrealistic weight-loss goals. It is unlikely that you will drop 50 pounds by the end of February. Create a plan that includes smaller goals and reward yourself when you reach them. Aim to eat healthier and start exercising and develop a routine you can follow. Once you’ve established a diet plan and exercise regimen, set realistic goals that you will be more likely to reach. When you reach a goal reward yourself with something that makes you happy, whether this means going for a massage, buying that new pair of jeans you’ve been eyeing up or even just taking some time out for yourself.
Be prepared – Do not wait until New Year’s to make your weight-loss resolution. Starting thinking about how you’re going to lose weight beforehand. Gorging yourself on tasty treats over the holiday season will only make it more difficult to start your plan. This does not mean you should completely deprive yourself of the many pleasures to be had at holiday parties and feasts, but keep your longer-term goals in mind.
Set your mind to it – It’s easy to say you’ll lose weight, but picking yourself up off the couch and doing it is a different matter. Getting started is the most difficult part of losing weight. The first couple of weeks are usually the most difficult because your body has to adjust to new eating habits and exercise. This is the time when you have to fight cravings and be proactive about making changes if you really want to lose weight. If you really want to achieve your goals, you have to exercise some will power and persevere. Once you establish a regular routine it will be easier than you think.
Get support – Weight loss is a difficult undertaking, especially if you try to reach your goals on your own. There are so many chances to slip up or stop dieting and exercising altogether. The best way to achieve success is to use the buddy system. Find a friend, co-worker or relative who is also trying to drop a few pounds and work together. You’ll be more likely to be active if you have someone to exercise with. Furthermore, it is easier to stick to your plan if you have someone watching your back to help you lose weight.
