Full Name: The Shangri-La Diet
Origin: Created by Seth Roberts, an associate professor at the Psychology department in Berkley
Description: Drink sugar-flavored water and / or olive oil before meals to create a fat-burning machine
Likes: Sugar-flavored water and any other foods
Dislikes: None
Looking for: Dieter who wants to try something new
Works Well With: Sugar and extra virgin olive oil

This incredibly absurd weight loss diet advises the dieter to consume a concoction of sugar water and / or a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil before or an hour after meals. In total, you should be consuming 2 tbsp. of oil and 6 tbsp. of sugar throughout the day. This weight loss diet involves no calorie counting or nutrient restrictions. According to Dr. Roberts, the genius behind the madness, your body has a specific set point for weight and at any given time it will either increase or decrease your metabolism to reach this point. By consuming bland foods (sugar water and flavorless oil) before your meals, you are able to break the taste-to-calorie association with food, and consequently lower your set point.
First of all, if you noticed, Dr. Roberts teaches psychology. He might know a thing or two about manipulating people to believe what he's saying, but his background in nutrition is a little less clear. The theories behind this diet have no scientific evidence or backing - Dr. Roberts conducted this experimental diet on himself, and turned what worked for him into diet guidelines. You'll remember though, that what works for one person will not necessarily work for everyone.
