Cavemen weren't fat, so it's only logical that we eat like them, right? This weight loss diet is based on the theory that we should only be eating foods that were eaten in the Paleolithic age. Foods were not processed at this time, and were consumed in their most natural form. Essentially, the Neanderthin diet is a low-carb diet that completely eliminates all processed foods (which are generally carbs). All foods should be consumed with as little processing as possible. As an example, Audette even criticizes the consumption of cashews, as they are laid out in the sun before being eaten.
While following the Neanderthin diet, calories are not counted and portion sizes don't seem to matter. You can eat as much as you'd like, but only foods from the accepted list. Fruit cannot be eaten in the winter months, as it may lead to weight gain. Meat is encouraged at any time, and the author claims he eats a pound of bacon for breakfast!
This diet is really complicated and detailed. It takes a lot of planning to figure out what foods you can and can't eat. It's almost impossible to dine out or eat with others while following this plan so it's not really conducive to real life.
