Origin: The Great American Weight Loss Challenge was a diet developed by weight loss expert Dr. Pamela Peeke. The diet is based on recent studies that show that drinking low- fat or fat-free milk can help with weight loss.

Description: Participants in the Great American Weight Loss Challenge are encouraged to drink 24 ounces of low-fat or fat-free milk every 24 hours and eat a healthy, balanced diet for 12 days. Dieters are told to calculate their caloric intake and then lower it by 500 calories per day. They are warned not to go below 1,200 calories per day. The diet is meant to be combined with daily exercise.

Likes: Milk, low fat dairy products, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, fish and lean meat.

Dislikes: Candy, high-fat desserts, fatty meats, fried foods and processed foods.

Looking For: Milk drinkers.

Works Well With: Oreo cookies.


While the milk diet has its good points, it seems a bit unrealistic. Most people have a hard time incorporating eight glasses of water into their daily diet, let alone 24 ounces of milk. The diet does include plenty of healthy food choices and is not terribly restrictive. It also includes a menu plan to make it easy for participants to make the right meal choices. This isn't a sustainable diet, however, and drinking that much milk could become pricey.

Milk is a healthy addition to any diet and it is high in calcium and protein, which helps promote weight loss.
Easy to follow diet plan with healthy food options.
Requires removing 500 calories a day from each individual's regular diet, which is realistic.

Not an option for individuals who are lactose intolerant, unless they purchase lactose-free milk which can be expensive.
Challenge participants may never want to look at a glass of milk ever again after 12 days.
