An apple a day may keep the doctor away. A recent study of more than 34,000 post menopausal women found that eating apples reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease.
Apples are high in flavonoids, compounds that are also concentrated in pears and red wine. These compounds work as antioxidants to help reduce the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol levels, which contributes to heart disease. The women who took part in the study are from the Iowa Women’s Health study – a 20-year research project that observes the women’s diets and overall health.
This new research sends an important message to women, particularly in light of the fact that fewer Americans are eating fruits and vegetables. A diet survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that less than one third of Americans get an adequate intake of fruits and vegetables. Other foods that contain flavonoids include tea, nuts, seeds and herbs.
