Morbidly Obese Man Outside for First Time in Five Years

Manuel Uribe used to hold the record of World’s Heaviest Man, weighing in at 1,235 pounds. That title has held him back more than anyone could ever imagine. He has been bedridden since 2002, completely dependent on relatives and close friends for food and personal hygiene. Yesterday, according to Mexican news reports, Uribe left his home in San Nicholas de Los Garza, Mexico for the first time in five years after losing 395 pounds off his large frame. Friends wheeled him out of his home on his bed where he was greeted by neighbors and hoards of media.

What’s so remarkable about Uribe’s weight loss is that he is dropping pounds by following a fad diet. He is working with Mexican doctors and nutritionists to lose an incredible 1,000 pounds by following The Zone Diet. Uribe serves as an inspiration to other individuals who suffer from obesity, proving that surgery is not the only way shed fat and return to a normal lifestyle. He is losing weight and improving his health along the way.

At the same time Uribe is using his experience to help others. When he regains his mobility he plans to start a foundation to help others who suffer from obesity to live healthier lifestyles and gain access to medical services.

No doubt! I can't imagine being stuck in a bed for five years! I wonder how long it will take him to lose all that weight?

He would have made it outdoors a lot sooner if folks had refused to deliver food to him.

Why do morbidly obese people insist on being photographed naked? I was eating lunch and almost hurled.

Btw - Jasper - huge whales like Uribe here would die if they weren't fed a lot of food daily. Their metabolism is such that they can't actually live off "the plentiful reserves". Kinda weird.

Why did he wait until after he broke the 1,200 lbs. mark to do something about his weight problem? Don't you think that he'd consider going on a diet just a little bit sooner? I hope this guy doesn't want kudos or anything. It's his own damn fault he got to that point.

I saw this on TLC.  While I will give this man credit for finally doing something about his weight, I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who weighs that much because they can not control their eating habits.  The program started by talking about how his weight skyrocketed when he moved to the US and started eating fast food like fried chicken and pizza.  He ate like a pig until he weighed 1200 lbs + and he expects people to feel sorry for him and help him for free? Nobody made him eat as much as he did - he had choices, choices that he has been forced to live with.  And isn't there some responsibility on his mother?  She needed to stop overfeeding him a long time ago!  He was in bed, what was he going to do?
