Sad Movies May Give You the Munchies

If you find yourself stopping a sad movie to dig through the freezer for a carton of chocolate ice cream, you're not alone. A research study conducted by the American Marketing Association found that people tend to consume more junk food when they watch sad or depressing movies.

Researchers tested 38 people by dividing them up and playing two separate movies. The group that watched the happy movie - Sweet Home Alabama - ate fewer snacks, while the group watching the tear dricker Love Story ate 36 percent more popcorn and chocolate candies.

The results make a lot of sense if you think about it. Many of us are emotional eaters and if we're feeling sad we tend to reach for the sugary, salty and fatty comfort foods for a quick fix, even though they do not really make us feel satisfied in the long run. Really, how many people go for raw carrot and celery sticks when they're feeling down?

This study just further proves that our emotions can dictate our eating habits. But does this mean that is we only watch upbeat movies we'll decrease our chances of gaining weight? Maybe that is something to consider.
