When you look good you feel good but what happens when being
skinny gets out of hand? Well, if you’ve seen the latest pictures of Kate Bosworth,
it’s obvious she has taken skinny to a whole new extreme. I can barely stomach
the images of the bones poking out of her back, let alone the fact her ribs are
literally protruding.
Think back to 2002 when healthy Kate stared in the surfing
movie Blue Crush, she was beautiful and glowing and looked like a true California Beach babe.
And then there’s Victoria Beckham. Seriously, what happened
to her? You’d think her athletic husband would have the sense to let her know
anorexic is not sexy. In some pictures she looks more like an alien than the
sexy diva she is. And her big bob of hair really adds to the distortion. Posh
has admitted that when she was a Spice Girl she was pressured by her management
to lose weight and says she became obsessed with dieting. But she has
definitely taken her weight loss to a new level as her arms and legs resemble
pins more than actual human limbs.
I sometimes wonder if these women ever actually stop and
really look at themselves and what they’re doing to their bodies and how much
they’re jeopardizing their health. In the grand scheme of things is being this
thin really that important? The more I read these magazines the more I’m
starting to believe a lot of these women aren’t exactly human. They live a
lifestyle with way different goals/aspirations than the rest of us.
Even more disturbing is that these women are serving as role
models for women who are struggling with an eating disorder. Many of the
pro-eating disorder websites showcase and admire pictures of Posh or Kate with
their bones sticking out and aspire to becoming as thin as them.
According to a news report by ABC, 80 percent of
10-year-olds are scared of getting fat and many of them want to look like these
thin Hollywood celebrities. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Diet/story?id=2182068&page=1
I decided to check one of these pro-anorexic sites out and
was appalled and deeply saddened by the emotional state of some these girls.
Not only did they congratulate one another on not eating and taking a slew of
weight loss supplements but they also posted pictures of skinny Nicole Richie and
stated that they wish they could one day look like her. One girl said:
i wish that my thighs looked like that in jeans! she [Nicole
Richie] is gorgeuss!
It’s interesting that Enimen can be banned from a city for
rapping about drugs and violence, while these girls are glamorized and
sensationalized by the media for being so thin. Both of these celebrities
portray unhealthy behaviors to our youth and both are disturbingly damaging to
the development of attitudes and beliefs.
