Ask Kristine Q&A

Exercise for Weight Loss

Q: How many times a week should a person exercise and for how long?  I'm 47 (female) and quit smoking one year ago and need to get some weight off. I started doing the Leslie Sansone tapes “Walk away the Pounds" 1 mile (20 minutes) and 2 miles (40 minutes). I have been doing them 1 mile one day then 2 miles the next day for a month now and haven't seen much difference yet. Should I be adding a bit more a day into this? I get walking at work each day as well, but nothing that breaks a sweat. I've been watching what I eat and trying to cut back. - Cathy

A: If your workout is not causing you to break a sweat you could probably challenge yourself a little more. Try increasing your pace when you walk first to see if this makes a difference or even jog a portion of the way. If you still do not feel winded and do not break a sweat then increase your distance.
