Ask Kristine Q&A

Soy Nuts as Healthy Snack

Q: Are soy nuts (unsalted ones) a good snack food? I've quit smoking and have been eating Red Hots (cinnamon candies) as a substitute - now I've put on some weight. I would like to use the soy nuts instead of Red Hots. – Susan

A: Soy nuts, particularly the unsalted kind, are certainly a better snack choice than candies. They are loaded with nutrients, including potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. They are also excellent sources of fiber, which will satisfy your hunger for a longer period of time. They have a relatively high fat content, as most nuts do, but contain healthy fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which make them a great snack when eaten in moderation. I would suggest creating your own snack mix using soybeans and dried fruit like apricots, cranberries or apples.
