Ask Kristine Q&A

Diet for PCOS and Hypothyroidism

Q: I am blood type A and I also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and an under active thyroid. What is the best diet for both of these conditions?

A: Both PCOS and hypothyroidism cause weight loss and the diet recommendations are fairly similar for both conditions. First off, avoid high fat foods, fried foods, processed foods and products made with refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, white rice and pastries). Complex carbohydrates should be limited but not eliminated. Less than 40 grams of carbohydrates per day could cause a condition called ketosis. Instead eat smaller amounts of carbohydrates throughout the day combined with proteins and monounsaturated fats. Good foods include fish, chicken, eggs, apricots, prunes, bran, low fat dairy products and olive oil. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into the diet, but limit or avoid cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, turnip, peaches and pears. Avoid coffee and tea but drink plenty of water and juice.

In your reply to stated hypothyroid causes weight loss. It is the opposite hypothyroid causes weight gain. Hyperthyroid causes weight loss. Thank you.
