Q: I'm 41, 5'4" and I weigh 125. I would like to weigh between 117 and 120 but it is impossible to keep that weight without taking prescription diet pills and eating very little. Obviously it's hard for me to get a prescription for any length of time. I run about 15 - 20 miles a week and do weights a couple of times a week. I can be pretty flexible with my eating and stay between 125 and 127 but I would prefer to weigh less. How can I change my set point so that I'm not constantly battling the same 5 or so pounds? – Lisa
A: You are certainly not alone in your frustrations. Many women complain about battling with “the fluctuating five pounds.” Controlling that weight becomes more difficult as we age and our metabolism decreases. If you’re running 15 to 20 miles per week a lack of exercise is obviously not the problem. You did not to disclose your caloric intake or your diet, so it is difficult to know whether that is causing the problem. You may just need to follow a diet plan.
