Q: I would like to lose 50 lbs. in about six weeks and was wondering if there is any way to accomplish this. I weighed about 235 lbs last time I checked and have never been on a diet before. I should be down to 150 to 170 lbs for my height (5’8”). Most of the weight is in my belly, which is sticking out a bit too much for my liking. What can I do? - Todd
A: Fifty pounds is a considerable amount of weight to lose in six weeks and will require a great deal of dedication. Without knowing your level of physical activity or your eating habits, it is difficulty to offer fool-proof advice. The best thing you can do is to start a regular workout routine and healthy meal plan. Exercise for at least a half hour every day. Jogging, jump rope and lifting weights are the best ways to work your whole body and turn fat into lean muscle.
Cut sugar, fried foods, processed foods, refined carbohydrates and excess salt out of your diet. Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Start every day with a high-fiber breakfast that incorporates some protein. Good choices include oatmeal (not instant), high fiber cereal, eggs, cottage cheese and fresh fruit. Choose lean meats over fatty meats. Eat poultry and fish in portion sizes that fit into the palm of your hand. Increase your intake of fresh vegetables. They will fill you up and provide you with more energy.
