Caloric Intake for Weight Loss

Q: How many calories per day should a woman consume in order to lose weight?

I am 72 years old and weigh 192 lbs. I would like to weigh 155 lbs. – Bobb

A: The right daily caloric intake really depends on the individual. If you are fairly active but are not experiencing weight loss you may have to lower your caloric intake a bit lower. If you do not exercise you should consider adding some sort of physical activity to your daily routine to help you meet your weight loss goal. Something as simple as taking a walk around the block can make a big difference. Women should never consume fewer than 1,200 calories per day. Somewhere around the 1,500 to 1,700 calories per day mark would probably be adequate. Consume foods that are low in calorie but will fill you up, including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish. Protein is also important. You can get this from eggs, legumes, fish and cottage cheese.
