Diet for Fibromyalgia

Q: I have been dealing with this condition (fibromyalgia) for about 15 years undiagnosed.  When my blood tests started to be out of the norm, I was sent to a rheumatic diseases doctor.  I was tested extensively and was told that I have a connective tissue disease.  I have been taking Mobic 15mg daily.  I also have restless leg syndrome and a sleep disorder.  I now take Rozerm 8mg, Remeron 15 mg for that.  I have heard about your diet helping with these disorders.  Can you help me?  I am 64 yrs old female, and weigh 225 lbs.  I retired 1 1/2 yrs ago and have gained 20 lbs. - Joy

A: You need to consume foods that will fuel your muscles and connective tissues. Try eating smaller meals more often throughout the day to provide a constant source of protein and carbohydrates (energy) to your tissues. Eat lean turkey, chicken and fish and avoid meats that are high in saturated fats. It is also important to avoid caffeine, alcohol, processed foods and deep fried foods. Avoid sugar because it could leave you feeling fatigued and further complicate your sleep disorder. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
